ABSTRACT
A cDNA clone, GjFW-1 (Griffithsia japonica Female Weak-1) was isolated by differential screening of a gametophyte-specific cDNA library of a red alga, G. japonica. The transcript corresponding to GjFW-1 was detected strongly in the vegetative thalli, male gametophytes and tetrasporophytes, but very weakly in the female gametophytes. The nucleotide sequence of GjFW-1 was identified as an open reading frame encoding 204 amino acid residues, which shared 52-63% homology with the previously reported 40S ribosomal protein S8 of other organisms. This is the first report on algal S8 protein cDNA clone.
