Vegetative and Reproductive Anatomy of Polyneura japonica (Yamada) Mikami (Delesseriaceae, Rhodophyta) in Korea

ABSTRACT
Vegetative and reproductive anatomy of Polyneura japonica (Yamada) Mikami (Delesseriaceae, Rhodophyta) was studied based on material collected from some localities along the southeast coast of Korea. Fronds, as in other genera rather than Polyneura Kylin, have conspicuous midribs and alternate lateral veins, which are composed of several, irregularly polygonal to rectangular cell layers, and except for the midribs and veins are monostromatic. Spermatangia are outwardly procuced from spermatangial mother cells derived from primary cell in monostromatic parts. Procarp development with two carpogonial branches and one sterile group and post-fertilization process are essentially the same as in other members of Polyneura. Tetrasporangial sori are formed in monostromatic parts between veins near blade margin or on lateral proliferations. In the sori, primary cells cut off cortical cells, followed by tetrasporangia from an inner cortical cell or a primary cell. The formation sequence is typical of Nitophylloideae type.
