ABSTRACT
The Wound-healing process in several filamentous red algae belong to the Ceramiales was studied. As a result, among 16 species investigated, three typical patterns, Fusion type, Non-fusion type and Elongation type were distinguished. In Fusion type, seen in 13 species including Griffithsia japonica, Antithamnion nipponicum, HEterosiphonia pulchara, and others, both the superjacent and subjacent cells of wounded cell produced repair-cells respectively, so that they make a single fusion cell. In Non-fusion type, seen in Callithamnion callophyllidicola, the repari-cells do not make a single fusion cell but only bring into contact with each other, developing pit-connection. In Elongation type, seen in Platythamnion yezoense and Polysiphonia morrowii, the repair-cells are not produced but both the superjacent and subjacent cells clongate to fill up the cavity, developing pit-connection. From the present investigation, we can presume that at least two different mechanisms are engaged in wound-healing process, inducement of repair-cells and promotion of the fusion.
