|
Whitening by crustose coralline algae was observed in coastal zone of Seogwipo area, Cheju Island. Fieldworks were carried out using scientific scuba diving at Bomok and Saeseom in August 1997. It was estimated that the increase of water temperature attendant upon unusual inflow of warm current was a major factor in a large-scale, and some isthmus-scale factors such as hindrance of seawater exchange, inflow of land pollutants, and grazing pressure by herbivores also could affect the desertion of benthic community. These factors might be mixedly processed in the nearshore environment to afflict differently in each region. To clarify the mechanism of algal whitening, comprehensive and systematic researches based on understanding of the population and community ecology of benthic marine algae should be demanded.
