ABSTRACT |
In order to elucidate the interrelationship between PHB and poly-P body, and their physiological role as energy storage compounds of blue-green algal cell, Chorogloea fritschii was cultured under various conditions (Pi-free or sufficient and/or different light/dark photoperiod), and then the changes of amounts of PHB and poly-P in the cell were analyzed cytochemically. Under Pi-starved dark condition, outstanding increase of PHB granules and lipid granules, thickening of sheath were observed. Under Pi-sufficient and 12 hr light/12 hr dark photoperiod, synthesis of poly-P, glycogen, and polyhedral body, and development of thylakoid membrane were observed. From the ultramicrography, we observed that PHB granules were formed from the thylakoid membrane, membrane-monolayer bounded, and forming large complex granule with cyanophycin granule at Pi-sufficient culture.
