Taxonomic Study on the Charophytes in Korea II. Nitella
Kwang Chul Choi, Young Hwan Kim
Department of Biology, Chungbuk National University
ABSTRACT
The taxa of the Characeae (Charophyta) in Korea were investigated taxonomically in order to re-evaluate the characteristics of species and to clarify their taxonomic validity. The materials were collected from July 1993 to August 1996 in all regions of Korea including Cheju Island. The herbarium specimens of Prof. D. Choe who studied Korean Characeae in 1960's were also examined for this study. As a result, 13 species and 6 varieties of the genus Nitella (N. acuminata var. capitulifera, N. acuminata var. subglomerata, N. axillaris, N. axilliformis, N. flexilis var. flexilis, N. flexilis var. longifolia, N. furcata, N. gracillima, N. gracilis, N. hyalina, N. imahorii, N. megacarpa var. megacarpa, N. megacarpa var. japonica, N. microcarpa, N. morongii var. spiciformis, N. mucronata var. mucronata, N. mucronata var. koreana, N. orientalis and N. rigida) were recognized. Among them N. imahorii, N. megacarpa var. japonica, and N. rigida are recorded for the first time in Korea during this study. A key to the Korean taxa of these charophytes is provided. The main habitats and the phenological characteristics of the Korean charophytes are described.
Key words: Nitella, Charophytes, Korea
