ABSTRACT
The relationships between phytoplankton stoichiometry and nutrient concentration in water column were examined at three stations in the Sonaktong River biweekly from June to October 1994 when Microcystis aeruginosa outbroke. The ammonium concentrations in water column ranged from 253 μg/l and having a miximum of 1,278 μg/l. The nitrate concentrations ranged from 119 μg/l to 5,854 μg/l, and the phosphate concentrations from 18.5 μg/l to 145.9 μg/l. Phosphorus rather nitrogen was considered as phytoplankton biomass controlling nutrient. The atomic ratio of C/N in phytoplankton ranged from 4.9 to 20.0, and that of N/P from 4.5 to 18.9. There was strong relationship between the atomic ratio of N/P of phytoplankton and inorganic nitrogen concentration in the water column. The N/P ratio of ambient water was not a useful predictor for phytoplankton growth limitation in the Sonaktong River.
Key words: C/N/P ratio, eutrophication, nutrient, phytoplankton, stoichiometry
