ABSTRACT
The samples of Cymbella affinis were collected form Yungchun Dam reservoir in Korea and observed with light and scanning electron microscope. C. affinis was compared with C. turgidula var. nipponica, a closely related species, collected form Lake Biwa, its type locality, in Japan. The number of stigma and shape of valve were not stable as dividing characters between these two taxa. Consequently there is a high possibility of Cymbella turgidula Grun. bar. nipponica Skv. to be a synonym of Cymbella affinis Kutz.
Key words: diatom, Cymbella Affinis, synonym, C. turgidula var. nipponica
