ABSTRACT
The seasonal change of an intertidal marine algal community at Padori of Tae-An Peninsula, western coast of Korea was investigated monthly by quadrat method from September, 1986 to August, 1987. As a result, a total of 94 species-11 greens, 21 browns and 62 reds-were identified. The plants observed throughout the year were 14 species, i. e. Enteromorpha compressa, Ulva pertusa, Codium fragile, Colpomenia sinuosa, Pelvetia siliquosa, Hizikia fusiformis, Sargassum thunbergii, Gelidium amansii, Corallina officinalis, C. pilulifera, Gloiopeltis furcata, Gymnogongrus flabelliformis, Chondrus ocellatus, and Acrosorium yendoi, respectively. The red algal species with reproductive organs throughout the year were G. amansii, G. flabelliformis, C. ocellatus, Ceramiopsis japonica, Ceramium kondoi, and Neorhodomela aculeata. The coverage through transect line was highest in mid-intertidal zone and lowest in upper intertidal zone; in month highest in August and lowest in February, and in season highest in summer and lowest in spring, respectively. The dominant species in coverage and frequency were melobesioidean algae. P. siliquosa, S. thunbergii, C. pilulifera, G. furcata, Dumontia simplex, and crustose red algae in order. In vertical distribution, G. furcata and crustose red algae were in upper, P. siliquosa and S. thunbergii were in middle and U. pertusa and Ralfsia spp. were in lower intertidal zone, respectively. The biomass in dry weight was 276 g/m super(2) on an average, whereas highest in August by 468 g/m super(2) and lowest in June by 183 g/m super(2) monthly, and highest in autumn and lowest in winter seasonally.
Key words: benthic algal community, intertidal zone, seasonal change
