A Chemotaxonomic Study on Geographical Variations of Korean Fucales Plants 2. Lectin

ABSTRACT
Korean Fucales plants were tested for haemagglutinin activity with human blood group A, B, O and AB. 4 genera 19 species and several variants of this algal group can be divided into three groups showing different haemagglutinic acitivities. The strongest haemagglutinic acitivities were observed from genus Myagropsis and Sargassum serratifolium, and S. ringgoldianum. Somewhat weak reactions were observed from Hizikia fusiformis, S. thunbergii, S. horneri, S. filicinum, S. micracanthum, S. nigrifolium, S. kjellmanianum, and S. giganteifolium. Negative haematogglutinic reactions were observed from the genus Coccophora, S. fulvellum, S. patens, S. pilulifenum, S. siliquastrum and S. heiphyllum. Sub-specific variants did not show marked difference from the haematogglutinic activity of the typical plants. Most of the species appeared to the non-specific for human blood-group antigens, reacting equally with A, B, O and AB erythrocytes.
